The M40 is one of the many standard issue gas masks that are given out by the United States armed forces to protect soldiers from any kind of NBC attack or nuclear, biological and chemical weapons attack. This mask is not however an effective mask to use in any knid of environment that is absent of oxygen and it does not protect against ammonia. On the mask can be found two voicemitters which are featured on either the right or left side. On this a voicecom adapter can be put on the voicemitter to amplify the voice inside of the mask. The canister filters also have the ability to be mounted on either side of the mask which allows for field weapons to be shouldered.

The M40 gas mask takes a C2 canister which has the ability to protect the user of the mask from up to fifteen nerve, blister or choking agent attacks. It also provides protection against two types of blood agent attacks. It is suggested that if you buy an M40 that you replace the C2 canister with the newer dark green canisters. The original black C2 canisters had a radioactive source inside of them and it was later on retired and replaced with the dark green C2 canister which did not contain the Chromium 63 radioactive element inside the canister.

It also features a drinking system built into the mask for use in environments where prolonged exposure to chemical environments require intake of water.

The M40 gas mask was introduced to the armed forces in the 1980's and was built to replace the M-17 series of gas masks that have been in service since the 60's.
